Four calls to action for protecting our water, our communities, and our future!

Unity Walk To The Polls, Oct. 25 — Plan now to join us!

On Sunday, October 25th, all Haw River Assembly community members in and near Guilford are invited to join the Unity Walk To The Polls — a multicultural, interfaith march to early voting, bringing together more than twenty organizations around one truth: immigrant justice, workers' rights, civil rights, racial justice, environmental justice, and voting rights and more are all part of the same struggle. We hope you'll walk with us.

Every voice. Every vote. Let's walk together.

Why this matters

These causes aren't separate — they flow from one conviction: that every person's voice and dignity matter, and that conviction demands we act. Walking together to the polls is how we live that out, and the sight of us — black, brown, white, every color, many issues — walking side by side will show Greensboro what real unity looks like.

What's happening

At 2:00 PM we gather at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 901 E. Friendly Ave., for an opening program with speakers and the Community Gospel Choir. Then we walk nine-tenths of a mile to the early voting site at the old Guilford County Courthouse, 301 W. Market St. — led by the Grimsley Blue Steel Drumline and giant butterfly Paperhand puppets. Once we arrive, music from the Ragin' Grannies and Singing Resistance fills the courthouse lawn, and young folks can try a Kids' Mock Voting Booth! You'll find a Voter Information table with everything you need to vote, plus tables from our sponsoring groups sharing more about their own work.

Press Conference on Data Centers, Fossil Fuels, and Constitutional Amendments

Haw River Assembly is joining organizational allies, other Riverkeepers, and communities across the state in solidarity against the proposed Constitutional Amendments. These will have disastrous impacts on local municipalities' ability to defend their communities against the harms and financial exploitation of extractive industries.

Join us at the Pittsboro Community House on October 28th at 2 PM to hear from Chatham County residents, leaders, and more on what these amendments would mean for Chatham.

Your Vote, Our Waters

North Carolinians know the system is rigged. Do you know what your local leaders are doing about it?  What will we do about it?

In addition to Federal, State, and Local elected officials, there are 3 NC Constitutional Amendments on the ballot this year. These amendments limit how your local elected officials can fund local water protections, would starve enforcement for environmental violations, and hand billions to corporations. Haw River Assembly encourages all community members to read the fine print on these amendments and VOTE NO for all 3.

"Lower Taxes for all NC": Keep the State income tax rate ceiling from being raised higher than 3.5%

  • This applies to the tax ceiling. The current rate is 3.99% for 2026 and state law drops it to 3.49% in 2027

  • DOES NOT LOWER CURRENT TAXES

"Property Tax Levy  Limit": Requires limits on property tax increases by local governments

  • Sets no cap or formula. Details to be written into law only after it passes

  • While NC homeowners could save, on average, $84 on their property taxes, large corporations like data center developers could avoid up to $1.7 billion in property taxes per site

  • Across NC, Duke Energy could pay $10 million less in property taxes

"Photo ID for All Votes": Requires all voters, not just those presenting top vote in person, to present phtoo identification before voting

  • Applies to mail-in ballots

  • State law already requires mail-in voters to provide a photo ID copy or an exception form

  • The amendment would move that into the Constitution

Voting is one way we can fight for our future. Together we have power.  Have your registered and checked your registration lately? Find out here.

Data Centers - Demand Statewide Action from Governor Stein

Lastly, as part of our support for statewide coalition work around data centers, please consider taking and sharing the following action for a statewide data center moratorium. To learn more about how data centers impact water quality and water supply click this link.

NC WARN launched a statewide petition drive calling on Gov. Josh Stein to use his authority and political power to implement a 2-year moratorium on data centers. This move reflects the accelerating public backlash against the surge of A.I. data centers now notorious for air, water and noise pollution.

Join the call! Sign the petition and share it widely!

Stein has helped fuel the data center frenzy even as the public has learned about a host of harms when their communities are targeted for the sometimes massive projects, and even as A.I. has become a national pariah.

Now, it’s on the Governor to begin making amends. He must freeze current data center development, halt the secret scheming by data center proponents and establish a first-ever, transparent and fair decision-making process that prioritizes the interests and voices of targeted communities.

In June NC WARN began calling on Stein to stop Duke Energy and state officials from quietly strategizing to recruit the noxious plants. And NC WARN’s attorney has begun the steps necessary to require the Governor and Commerce department to release all public records showing their involvement in this burgeoning statewide scandal.
