Thank you Chatham County Commissioners: Now, Let’s Take The Next Step
READ THE CHATHAM COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS RESOLUTION HERE
First, Thank you! Haw River Assembly is incredibly grateful for the care, attention, and dedication that the Chatham County Board of Commissioners and County Staff have given to hearing our concerns about Enbridge's proposed fracked-gas pipeline for Chatham County. The future of energy is clean and community-owned!
This project would cause irreparable harm to the Haw, Deep, and Rocky rivers, as well as disregarding the rights of our community's farmers and other rural landowners who demand that this project not come through their homes.
This resolution is only part of the fight. With our experience fighting other fracked-gas pipelines like the Mountain Valley Pipeline and the Southeast Supply Enhancement Project, we know a resolution is only a stepping stone. We need the County's continued strong support and advocacy.
Our ask: The Chatham Board of Commissioners must now send their resolution to the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) and ask for a clear demonstration of specific public need and a full alternatives analysis examined by Enbridge. This must occur BEFORE the permit processes associated with this project. We call on our local elected leaders to work closely with state leadership in representing the interests of their constituents. Senator Natalie Murdock, Representative Robert Reives, and others, please ensure that we exhaust every single opportunity to stop this pipeline.
A resolution of opposition needs to have strong follow-through actions behind it. Fighting our way through the state and federal permitting process without strong Board of Commissioners support will place us at a grave disadvantage.
Let's make sure the NCUC knows we don't want this pipeline!
