Two Pipelines, One Clear Outcome: Trapping Our State with Dirty Energy

August 8, 2025 -

Hi everyone, happy Friday! Aidan here with some important updates on the fight to keep pipelines out of our state. Wanna do something physical besides writing/calling/emailing? I have just the opportunity for you!!

I am a Lead Organizer on the No Southeast Supply Enhancement Project (NoSSEP) campaign, but there are other pipeline projects proposed in our state besides the SSEP! One of these is the dangerous Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP)

MVP was almost cancelled, largely due to the fight that our frontline communities and Water Protectors have been continuing for nearly 10 years. The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) previously rejected MVP Southgate’s permit TWICE over the years due to persistent public opposition. But now, after years of delay, its ugly face is back. This is thanks to federal “fast-tracking” and the fact that MVP developers changed the Southgate pipeline proposal to bring even more methane gas into the state. However! Showing up worked before; it will work again.

Come Speak Out Against MVP Southgate at the Public Hearing on Tuesday, August 12! (flyer below)

  • Press conference at 5:15 p.m., public hearing begins at 6 p.m.

  • Eden City Hall Council Chambers - 308 E. Stadium Drive, Eden, NC 27288

  • Carpooling from the Triangle and surrounding areas available

  • Register and find more details online at bit.ly/southgate-water

Mountain Valley Pipeline wants to build a high-pressure methane gas pipeline, called MVP Southgate, which could pollute water bodies in Rockingham County. This would lock our state into decades of harmful methane gas infrastructure. MVP is seeking a permit from the NCDEQ to cross waterways in North Carolina. NCDEQ wants to hear from you before making a decision.

There are several ways to lend your voice to protect our water and communities! NCDEQ will hold a public hearing on August 12 in Eden, N.C., to hear directly from the community. If you are unable to attend, you can also sign this petition or submit a comment directly to the agency.

Speak up for clean water in N.C.

The Southgate pipeline would cross the Dan River on the border of North Carolina and Virginia. The Dan provides high-quality drinking water and recreation to many in the region. The location of the crossing is also home to several endangered species. If this unneeded pipeline is built, we could be paying for it for decades through polluted water as well as higher energy bills.

RSVP or submit a comment today! We can stop this project again with your help. And come back next week for action steps against SSEP!

As always, this is Aidan wishing community care, light, and love.

Take care of yourselves and each other,

~ Aidan Loretz (they/them, she/her)
