These small aquatic insects are excellent indicators of stream health. If you find 11 different types in one spot, that's a good sign. If you come up empty-handed just a few hundred yards downstream? Something's going on and needs investigation. "That was the most surprising thing to me," Anna says. "How different the water could be upstream and downstream. She'd collect samples, identify what she found, input the data into Google Forms, and she also helped to create Instagram posts for Macro Monday, HRA's social media series introducing people to these water quality indicator critters. Her favorite finds? Water pennies, caddisflies, and the occasional crayfish. She even witnessed a deer jumping over the river during one quiet monitoring session near Saxapahaw, a reminder that clean water matters for all the watershed's residents, not just humans. The work also opened her eyes about localized pollution. While monitoring multiple sites on Bolin Creek in Chapel Hill, Anna noticed significant differences in water quality over short distances. Sites near the former coal ash dump showed particular degradation. "That stuff doesn't go away overnight at all," she notes. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) released an Environmental Assessment for the SSEP methane gas pipeline, proposed for Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. The assessment claims to analyze the environmental impacts of the SSEP’s multiple sections of pipeline, massive gas compressor station expansions, and additional infrastructure modifications. Between now and Nov 19: Submit Your Comment to North Carolina DEQ for SSEP Air Permits The SSEP will need to get air permits approved for the two Compressor Stations proposed as part of the project. Compressor Stations add pressure to the gas and push it through the pipe. Stations that are powered by gas produce harmful pollution as a result. Toxic air pollutants like formaldehyde and fine particulate matter (tiny fragments of pollution that are harmful when inhaled) can cause or make worse asthma, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular issues like arrhythmia and heart attacks. Events coming up! - Thanks to grassroots pressure, the Greensboro City Council has passed a unanimous resolution of concern over the proposed Transco-Williams Southeast Supply Enhancement Project (SSEP) methane gas pipeline. The original proposed resolution from Mayor Vaughan was much weaker, but thanks to public pressure through your mobilization, your calls and emails to the Mayor and Mayor Pro Temp last weekend, and the energy we all maintained over these past 9 months, we got some more meat added to the resolution! Re-committing to the City of Greensboro's Strategic Energy Plan, showing that the project conflicts with the overall goal of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2040 Acknowledges the Silver LEED designation from the U.S. Green Building Council, received in 2020, which includes standards of reducing environmental harm and enhancing human health Asks that FERC "evaluates all potential risks and alternatives to the proposed pipeline expansion" Guilford County, Forsyth County, and the Town of Midway have passed similar unanimous, bipartisan resolutions expressing concerns and opposition to the proposed SSEP. September 11, 2025: Brenntag Mid-South, located in Durham, North Carolina, is a regional distributor of chemicals and other industrial products. The facility supplies chemicals to various industries, including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. However, the plant has been involved in several water quality violations impacting the surrounding community, raising concerns regarding public health and environmental safety.
